We foal all our bloodstock at Apedroc and hence have a strong familiarity with them from birth. We have a clear sense of their personalities right from the outset. We aim to get them out of a stable and running about in the open as soon as possible to build confidence, agility, and strength.
Given small numbers, our foals are used to a great deal of handling early on, building a strong and trusting relationship with the team, which is very helpful in preparing them for their future careers. Their nutritional needs are assessed from day one, and they are weighed and condition-scored regularly to assess development and make any necessary feed adjustments. We use the Saracens' global database to assess development against peer group averages. Farriery assessment also starts within week two, continuing throughout their first year, in order to provide the opportunity to compensate for any conformation challenges early on.
We generally wean between six and seven months when we assess the foal is ready. Foal prep starts after weaning with our experienced team. Growing up at Apedroc our foals are used to a variety of experiences whether it be a surprise encounter with a goat, peacock or satanic looking sheep.
